Family Weekend 2016

All family members of current students are invited to visit Whitworth during Family Weekend. The weekend gives families an opportunity to join in the Whitworth experience by taking part in a session led by a member of the university's faculty, hearing from Whitworth President Beck A. Taylor, and enjoying various campus events. Additional information regarding the weekend is listed below. We hope to see you in October!  
 
 
 
You must complete all steps of the form to be registered for this event. Payment by credit or debit card is required. You will receive an immediate confirmation email if you have successfully registered. 

If you do not receive a confirmation email and feel that you have registered, please call 509.777.3449.

Important Information

  • When you register, you will have the opportunity to specify which activities you would like to participate in. Some activities are complimentary while others have a registration fee. The costs will be noted in the schedule below and in the registration form.  
  • Before you register,  we recommend that you have the names of your guests (if applicable).
  • You may register your current student(s) for the available activities but please do not register them for any meals (they will either swipe their meal card or pay a special rate at the door). For the theatre production, all current students get in for free with student ID so please make sure they bring their ID with them to the show.
  • Payment by credit or debit is required to complete the online registration form.
  • Online registration is available until Thursday, October 13, at 5 p.m.; after this time, "at the door" pricing will apply (cash and credit accepted).
  • No refunds available after Friday, October 7, 2016.

10 a.m.–6 p.m. | Art Exhibit in Oliver Gallery 
 
3–7 p.m. | Registration Check-in, Hixson Union Building (HUB)
Stop by the registration table to pick up important information about the weekend, including information for which you may have pre-registered.

6:30–7:15 p.m. | Dessert Reception, HUB
Families of current students are warmly invited to join President Beck A. Taylor for a dessert reception in the HUB. Mingle with other parents and students, and then, if you like, attend the fall theatre production. This reception does not include tickets to the theatre production (available separately). Price: The reception is complimentary for all families who registered online before Thursday, October 13.
 
7:30 p.m. | Theatre Production: The Music Man
Tickets may be purchased through the Family Weekend registration form and picked up at Will Call (details available closer to the date). Price: Free for Whitworth Students with student ID, $12 for Regular Admission, $10 for Seniors (65+)/Non-Whitworth students.

Stop by the registration table to pick up important information about the weekend, including information for which you may have pre-registered.
 
8–10 a.m. | Breakfast Buffet, HUB
Converse with other Whitworth families and enjoy breakfast before the full day of activities. Price: $10 per adult (13+), $5 per child (5-12), free for children 4 and under. At the door, adults will be $12 (child rates do not change). Current students may use their meal plan or pay a special rate at the door.
 
10–10:45 a.m. | President's Address, Location TBD
All are invited to hear an informal address from President Beck A. Taylor, who will welcome all families and guests to this special weekend. Price: Complimentary for all families of current students.
  
10 a.m.–2 p.m. | Art Exhibit in Oliver Gallery
 
11–11:50 a.m. | Mini-Colleges (3 options) OR Campus Tour
Each attendee may choose a mini-college session (see below) or a campus tour. Registering for this activity in advance will guarantee your spot. Limited mobility accommodations will be available for the campus tour. Price: Complimentary for all families of current students.
 
Mini-College Sessions:
  • Families Communicating - Ron Pyle, Ph.D., Professor of Communication
    Healthy communication is a vital part of building and sustaining a strong relationship with your college student. In this session, Communication Professor Ron Pyle will share some foundational principles for family communication. 
  • Financial Wellness of College Students – Robin Henager, Ph.D., Professor of Business
    This session will include information about money skills, investments in education, and student loan debt.
  • Orientation 2.0  - Moderated by Josh Cleveland, '01, Assistant Director of Alumni and Parent Relations.
    We know new questions arise for parents of first-year students as semester moves along. Hear from staff from Student Life, Counseling Center, Student Employment, Student Accounts, Registrar, and more as they address frequently asked questions.

Noon | Family Weekend Lunch, HUB
Families are invited, with their students, to enjoy lunch in the dining hall. Price: $10 per adult (13+), $5 per child (5-12), free for children 4 and under. At the door, adults will be $12 (child rates do not change). Current students may use their meal plan or pay a special rate at the door.
 
12 p.m. | Women's Soccer Game: Whitworth v. PLU
Tickets are not required for soccer games.
 
Around 12:45 p.m. | Halftime Reception during Soccer Game
 
7:30 p.m. | Theatre Production: The Music Man

Sunday, Oct. 16

7:30 a.m. | Family 5K Fun Run/Walk, U-Rec
The Fun Run and Walk is a family friendly opportunity to exhibit both your Whitworth Spirit and enjoyment for physical activity with your student.  Please color yourself with all the Whitworth apparel that you own.  Let’s have some fun! All registrants must sign a liability release form the day of the event.  Any registrant under 18 will be required to have a parent signature on the form.  The event will have a running clock available for participants to gauge overall time. If you have any questions about this specific event, please contact Todd Sandberg at tsandberg@whitworth.edu. Price: Complimentary for all families of current students but pre-registration is required.
 
8 a.m.–1 p.m. | Breakfast Buffet, HUB

Morning | Worship Service Opportunities
We encourage you to worship with your student at wherever area church she/he has been attending this school year. If you and your student would like to try a new church in the community, some places to consider include (times are subject to change):

If you prefer, join us in the chapel for a worship service led by President Beck A. Taylor. Registration is not required.
